Anglican Church in Southern Africa Calls for Freedom in Zimbabwe

The Anglican Church of Southern Africa has called on churches to “work with haste for the freedom of Zimbabwe.”

The church’s Provincial Synod adopted a resolution on October 2, proposed by the Right Revd Rubin Phillip, Bishop of Natal, which read:

"THAT THIS SYNOD send greetings to the Bishop of Harare, The Rt Revd Chad Gandiya and his people, who have been made to suffer at the hands of the former Bishop of Harare, The Rt Revd Norbert Kunonga, who has created a rival church. We note that a similar situation exists in Manicaland Province, where the former Bishop, Elson Jakazi, is creating similar problems for Bishop Julius Makoni.

"We wish to assure them of prayers and support, and further call on all Anglicans and the ecumenical community to work with haste for the freedom of Zimbabwe."

The Anglican Church of Southern Africa comprises dioceses in Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and the island of St Helena. Anglican dioceses in Zimbabwe are part of the Church of the Province of Central Africa.
