Anglican Church Protests at Long Delays at Lesotho/South Africa Borders

The Anglican Church of Southern Africa has called for an end to the long delays which travellers at South African border posts with Lesotho have been experiencing since the World Cup earlier this year.

The Church’s triennial Provincial Synod said in a resolution passed at a meeting in Benoni that that “the people of Lesotho have since the World Cup 2010 suffered greatly at… borders due to exceptionally long queues averaging five hours.” The synod asked Archbishop Thabo Makgoba to facilitate a meeting between South African and Basotho leaders to resolve the issue.

The full text of the resolution read:

THAT THIS SYNOD,

NOTING

1. That the people of Lesotho have since the World Cup 2010 suffered greatly at the Lesotho / South African borders due to exceptionally long queues averaging 5 hours;

2. That this practice is having adverse effects on the lives of people on both sides of the border;

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS the Metropolitan kindly to facilitate a meeting between the President of South Africa and the Prime Minister of Lesotho and their respective Ministers of Home and Foreign Affairs to discuss the matter and reach an amicable solution.
